BEING A DESIRED MUSLIM YOUTH
By: Neni Damayanti, S.Pd.
Youth is a period where a person looks for identity, proves existence, develops potential and also seeks for attention. Youth is a time when the spirit of a person is still burning, the energy is still strong and the mind is still fresh. These are great blessings from Allah that should be utilized properly by youths to do good in order to win the pleasure of Allah. As with the other great blessings in humans, these blessings will also be held accountable before Allah.
As the prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
"The feet of the son of Adam shall not move from before his Lord on the Day of Judgement, until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his youth and what he wore it out in, about his wealth and how he earned it and spent it upon, and what he did with what he knew." (Sahih at-Tirmidhi).
On the other hand, youth is a time full of temptations to indulge in lust. A young man who is in a period of physical and mental growth, experiences a lot of turmoil in his mind and soul, which often causes him to experience shocks in life and tries his best to escape from these problems. In conditions like this, of course, the opportunity to fall into badness is enormous.
It is extraordinary if a young man with various kinds of worldly temptations, he remains steadfast in religion and istiqamah in it, whereas, the other youths still tend to the world and have the ability and enthusiasm to achieve it. Hence, a young man like this will receive the shade of Allah on a very difficult day on the Day of Resurrection.
Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,
“The seven people who will be protected by Allah on a day that has no protection except His protection, (ie) a just leader and a young man who grows up in obedience to Allah.” (Muttafaqqun alaihi).
Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam also said,
"Indeed, Allah Ta'ala really admires a young man who does not have ‘shabwah’". (Sahih Ahmad).
The meaning of "shabwah" is a young man who does not follow his lusts, he accustoms himself to doing good and tries hard to stay away from evil.
Shaykh al-'Uthaimin explained the reasons that must be taken to improve the morals of youth based on Islamic guidance, there are:
1. Maximally Utilize the Spare Time
One of the causes of youth damage is the absence of time, aka no activities that have positive values. If it is not filled with positive activities, it will be filled with negative activities.
Ibn Qayyim Al-Jauziyah rahimahullah said,
"If you are not preoccupied with good things, you will definitely be preoccupied with vanity things." (Al Jawabul Kaafi).
This is the rule of life that if we don't fill our lives with positive activities, then surely we will fill them with activities that are negative or at least useless and less useful. A young man should strive (to fill his spare time) with activities that are suitable and useful for him, such as reading, writing, or other activities, to avoid the void of his activities, and make him a member of society who does goodness for himself and others.
2. Choosing Good Associates (Good Friends)
Choosing good friends will greatly affect the minds, thoughts and behavior of the youths. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said,
"A human being will follow the religion of his close friend, so one of you should see who is his close friend.” (Sahih Abu Dawood).
Therefore, a young man should try to find friends with people who are good, pious and intelligent, so that he can take advantage of his goodness. So, a young man should consider the situation of the people with whom he associates, by examining their conditions and morals.
3. Choosing Good and Useful Reading Sources
Consuming destructive reading sources, whether in the form of articles, newspapers, magazines and others, will cause one's religion to fall as well as lead to bad morals, especially if the youth does not have a strong religious education background and the right mindset to be able to distinguish between right and wrong, as well as what is beneficial and destructive. So, it is needed for the youths to find and choose good reading sources.
For all that reasons, youth should fill their time with positive activities or looking for positive activities. For example, attending scientific assemblies, memorizing Al-Quran and Sunnah, conducting social activities and so on. Youths also need to immediately find good friends to get along in carrying out these activities so that they can support each other and advise each other, because youths are still very unstable and easily influenced and agitated by the environment and the friendship. In addition, youths must also be patient to stay away from reading or stay away from things that can make him fall into having bad morals.
May Allah make it easy for Muslim youths to become the desired Muslim youths.
